What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, periodontitis, and pyria, is a progressive disease that causes the loss of the bone and the gums around the teeth.  It is an inflammatory disease caused by bacteria that is in the mouth at levels that are destructive.   If periodontal disease is left untreated tooth loss is possible.  Early detection is key, the disease can be treated and the progress slowed.
