Who should not get veneers?

Porcelain veneers can dramatically enhance your smile and provide protection for teeth with minor damage. Unfortunately, veneers are not right for everyone. At Ellettsville Dental Center, Dr. David Compton and our team believe in helping patients understand both the benefits and veneer risks and limitations before starting treatment.

Are Dental Veneers Right for Everyone?

While veneers can correct chips, discoloration, and gaps, not every patient is a strong candidate. Veneers require healthy tooth enamel for proper bonding, and maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to preserving the results. So, who is not a candidate for veneers?

  • Individuals who chronically grind or clench their teeth (known as “bruxism”), which, particularly during sleep, can damage or dislodge veneers.
  • Patients with severe dental misalignment can make precise veneer placement impossible.
  • Individuals with untreated gum disease or extensive tooth decay can also interfere with a veneer’s long-term success.

In these cases, other restorative or orthodontic options may be recommended first.

It’s also worth noting that, if you have a habit of biting nails, chewing on ice, or using your teeth as tools, your veneers may not hold up long-term.
